Get rid of your double chin with Kybella™ in NYC
What is Kybella™?
Submental fullness. That sure sounds better than “double chin.” But submental fullness is the clinical term for a double chin. Like Rodney Dangerfield, who himself had an impressive double chin, submental fullness gets no respect in the aesthetic universe.
Despite being a common condition, submental fullness is an undertreated/under-targeted aesthetic facial condition. Until now. Thanks to a new prescription medicine called Kybella™, Dr. Sobel offers treatment for double chins without any need for surgery or downtime.
Facts about submental fullness
The reality of the human face is that as we age our skin sags. This is due to a variety of factors: the influence of gravity, simple aging (where decreasing production of collagen means the skin has less underlying support), genetics (some people simply have looser skin below the jawline), and weight gain. All of these factors cause our skin to droop. And without the support of muscle or bone below it, the skin under the chin is particularly affected.
If you have a double chin, you’re far from alone. A 2015 survey conducted by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery found that 67% of people said they’re bothered by a double chin. The survey also found that those people were just as bothered by their double chin as their wrinkles or other signs of aging.
Along comes Kybella™
Then along came Kybella™. Kybella™ is the brand name for a prescription injection formulated with deoxycholic acid. Kybella® is the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment for adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin.
Deoxycholic acid, the active ingredient in Kybella™, is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath the chin, Kybella™ destroys the fat cells. Once those cells are gone, there is no storage mechanism to store and accumulate fat in the area.
How many treatments will I need?
Dr. Sobel will customize your Kybella™ treatment. The number of treatments will depend on the amount of fat stored below, under your chin, along with your desired final profile. Most patients experience visible results in two to four treatments, but up to six treatments may be administered, spaced at least one month apart. Multiple treatments yield the best results.
Because Kybella™ destroys the fat cells, results are permanent. However, if you gain weight, submental fat can return.
What are the side effects with Kybella™?
Since deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body, reactions to it are rare. Side effects are those typical to injectables: swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, and some redness in the injection sites. Swelling typically lasts three to four days, but there can be some residual swelling that may last longer.
How long does a session take?
Because the target area is so small, a Kybella™ session with Dr. Sobel takes less than 30 minutes, making it easy to fit in treatment over a lunch hour or similar time.
While Kybella™ delivers truly impressive results, there are surgical alternatives that can have even more dramatic results. This is especially true if the patient has excess skin under the chin. In this case, a facelift or neck lift is the best tool to address the double chin. Without excess skin, liposuction is a surgical option to remove submental fat.
