Plucking, waxing, shaving, and other methods of hair removal often take up far too much of our time. And, they are often uncomfortable! It’s no wonder that men and women near our NYC dermatology and aesthetic medicine practice ask us about laser hair removal. If you have been mulling over the idea of getting rid of your razor for good, here are a few things you need to know:

Is Laser Hair Removal Painful?

Laser hair removal is not painful. The idea of lying beneath a laser device as it snaps away from one follicle to another sounds unappealing. Luckily, this is not at all how our patients describe their laser hair removal experience!

Is it okay to pluck hair?

Pluck flowers, not your hair. The key element in laser hair removal is hair! The way that follicles are incapacitated in their production is by the absorption of energy, which heats the walls of the follicle. It is not the follicle that absorbs laser energy, it is the pigment in hair. So shave, but leave the plucking to your gardener.

Pigment – a key element for Laser Hair Removal success

Another key element for laser hair removal to work is pigment. Historically, this treatment has been most successful on individuals with lighter skin and darker hair. As laser devices have become more sophisticated, it has become possible to treat a wider range of pigments. That being said, it may take a few more treatment sessions to obtain the desired outcome if your hair is very light. And, gray hair still has no pigment, and pigment is necessary for laser hair removal.

Stay the full course

Laser hair removal is successful only when the full course of treatment is conducted. Treatments are performed every 4 to 8 weeks, which is typically easy to fit in to even a busy travel schedule. And, because we use the latest laser technology, many of our patients require only 3 to 5 treatments.

Commit to your skin- hydrate!

Hydration is necessary for smooth, supple skin. The need for moisture may increase during laser hair removal due to the absorption of energy and heating of the internal structure of the follicles. To keep your skin from looking reptilian, hydrate with water, and also with a moisturizing lotion that is free of alcohol.
